A good two years after we became the first company anywhere to acquire a licence to manufacture Smart Meter Gateways with a BSI Protection Profile, in February 2020 the Federal Office for Information Security ordered the long-awaited rollout of SMGWs. And almost simultaneously with the go-ahead came coronavirus to bring the world to a juddering halt.

Temporary shortages of materials due to broken supply chains then compelled us to shorten our working hours on the operational side for six weeks and take measures to minimise the risk of infection. As well as hampering many tried-and-tested processes, the social distancing requirements also led to delays in current plans and in the start of work on our new building. Thanks to rapid action, however, we along with our partners were at least able to make a small contribution to the fight against Covid-19 through the manufacture of components for breathing equipment and medical temperature scanners.

In the subsequent period, too, the structural growth of digitalisation in Industry 4.0 enabled us to make up in large part for the unavoidable downturns suffered in the more badly affected sectors, allowing us to achieve almost entirely the figures reached the previous year.

Despite all these restrictions and adverse conditions, we have continued to follow our innovation strategy undeterred. Now a full member of the recently launched MIOTY Alliance, we are working urgently on the development and market launch of this new technology. As a partner for production and distribution, we have joined the new open standard for indoor location tracking and indoor navigation in production processes through ultra-wideband radio technology, incorporated into Profibus International and honoured with the Hermes Award 2020.

We are hence well-positioned for the future, but we are also aware that these times are presenting enormous challenges for many of our business partners. Our hope for you, as it is for us, is that 2021 will be a year in which we all keep safe, stay healthy and enjoy life.
